SYDNEY ARTIST MATTHEW GILLET - PEACE INSIDE ANXIETY

Matthew Gilett is the Venue Manager of Sydney’s most loved music institution, The Annandale Hotel. South Coast (NSW) born Matthew Gillett is a self-taught painter whose dormant passion was re-ignited after a he sustained a serious head injury at the hotel. Now fully recovered, Matthew finds himself very lucky to be here today and painting has helped him deal with the anxiety and insecurities resulting from this head injury. Simply put, painting plays a major role in his full recovery.

"My paintings just happen, its all in my head, I feel a natural urge to get the image out. I wake up in the middle of the night and I have to paint, otherwise I can’t sleep. It is as much needed in my life as is loving. I get the same energy rush from surfing as I do with painting, it releases the same endorphins, smells, textures, colours and movement. It is my release. The end result of creating Music and Art have similar characteristics, no matter what your reasons are, you’re still putting yourself out there to be judged."

This can be a daunting scenario, but hanging out with the bands at the hotel, seeing them come in every night and give it their all gave Matthew the confidence to stay on course with his true passion - Painting, which has led him here to his debut exhibition. PEACE INSIDE ANXIETY takes place at Mart Gallery, Surry Hills, Sydney from Thursday 30 September to Sunday 16 October.

Life offers us many roads to travel through and it seems like Matthew has found his path. With trips planned to paint in Indonesia in 2011, PEACE INSIDE ANXIETY is a celebration of those late night visions, the search for inner peace and where his journey has taken his life thus far.

Where it goes from here is definitely in tomorrows hands. But today Matthew is just happy to be here - creating and living.
