Dancemeisters
of the next wave of Australian music is just one of
the ways local Australian outfit ON have
been described. Yet however you choose to describe them, it
is true that the ON ensemble are busy programming
beats and creating some of the freshest grooves and tunes
down under.
Although the core members
of ON have been around in various guises,
including ONinc , since 1997, 2003
saw the reinvention of the ON
line-up to include featured vocalist and guitarist Amy
Vee and the added drumming duties of Nic
Cecire whose wide and diverse experience (Whitlams/Def
FX/Yothu Yindi) allowed Scottie's move to Percussion/Vox and
Samples, with Scottie's sister Gina is still as forthright
as ever on the bass.
And the success of
the new lineup was assured during October of 2003 where ON
won the Artist of the Year @ the
ABC Music Awards as well as the Best
Contemporary Song award for their track
Fortunately Everything . These two high
profile awards led ON to sign a fresh recording
deal with new ABC music imprint FLYMUSIC .
The resultant 6V EP will be the first
recording released with the new ON line-up and the first of
many to be released on FLYMUSIC.
Featuring six tracks
6V is a sonic experiment, a melting pot
of dance styles with touches of Sly Stone, old school groove
and rocking guitar.
6V
follows up on some awesome releases from ON
in recent years: 1999 saw the release of the Lunchbox
Thermos EP, which instantly gained high rotation
on National broadcaster Triple J and Channel
[V] . The first single to hit the airwaves was
Paranoia and Macy Gray
liked it so much she selected ON herself
to support her on her national tour in 2000. Their debut album,
The Rhythm Flavour , was released in 2001
after being recorded in ON 's own studios
with Phil McKellar and Nick Mainsbridge
engineering, producing and mixing. Featuring guest appearances
from Waikiki's Kikisun (better known as
Juanita Stein), Bellydance's Tony Hughes
and actress/singer Abi Tucker , The Rhythm
Flavour featured no less than five singles: Paranoia
, Am What I Am , Silver
Girl Shuffle , Size Does Matter
and Spooky . For ON
appearances at both the 2001 & 2002 Big Day Out followed,
as well as regularly featuring in video, film and TV shows
including the popular Channel 10 series The Secret
Life of Us . And most recently the new lineup recorded
a cover of Gary Glitter's Rock & Roll Pt 2
for the forthcoming Australian feature film Somersault
.
The ON sound means hook-laden songs mixed
with technology, Latin percussion, samples, live bass and drums,
all performed live onstage with an unmistakable energy. 6V's
six tracks manages to capture this live energy as well
as conveying the melting pot of dance styles & influences,
infusing them all to make something entirely new and completely
listenable. In short, ON doesn't need 240
volts to electrify – they only need 6.
